It’s important to keep your smile clean and cared for. Proper care will help prevent disease, infections, damage, and decay from occuring - which can all be painful, stressful, and time consuming to deal with.
Preventative Care At Home
It all starts with you. Daily brushing and flossing done at home is the first step to proactive oral hygiene. Make sure to brush and floss morning and night every day. We provide information on the best way to brush and floss, as well as guidance on what sort of toothpaste and toothbrush you should be using. For our youngest patients, we’re happy to teach the proper techniques for brushing and flossing to give them a healthy start to their oral hygiene.
Checkups and Professional Cleaning
It’s recommended that you get a checkup and professional cleaning twice a year. If this isn’t possible, at least once a year is necessary to ensure your continued oral health. During your checkup, we will check your teeth and gums for any decay, infection, or abnormality. We may also do some X-rays to check for cavities and bone density.
During professional cleanings, the plaque and tartar buildup will be carefully removed from your teeth. This procedure is called scaling and planing. Special tools are used to scrape away tartar buildup, making sure the teeth and tooth roots are smooth and clean which helps prevent gum irritation and enamel damage.
During your cleaning appointment, we may also give your teeth a flouride treatment which will help protect against decay and enamel deterioration.
